Introducing Gorilla Warfare

Gerrit August 4, 2010 Gorilla Warfare No Comments

Gorilla warfare… sounds fun, doesn’t it? It’s the name of a project I’m working on. Not on my own, it’s rather big for a sole and unexperienced developer like me. Fortunately, two other developers are also working on the code while two artists are doing all the creative stuff we developers are utterly useless at.

So now you’re wondering what this project is all about. Basically, it’s an artillery based game. Early forms of this were games like Tank Wars, Scorched Earth, or, on of my personal favourites as it is written in the first programming language I ever learnt: Gorillas.bas. Later on, a very famous game named after little creatures also known as Lumbricus terrestris arrived on the scene, and since then has been the measure for all games in that genre.

A lot of similar games were developed all over the world, all trying to grab some of the market share. Most of them failed, some succeeded a little, none of them had a real breakthrough.

Yet still we’re going to create a similar game. There is one big difference though: we will develop it for the mobile phone OS Android instead of Windows on a regular PC. This means we will have to cope with stuff like limited memory, limited processing power, a smaller framework than we’re used to in java, completely different user interaction, and lots of other stuff we are not used to anymore on modern PCs.

Quite a challenge, eh? Progress is moving along nicely though, an update will come soon!
